Margaret Johnson Canby graduated from AHHS in 1950. Shortly after, she became a teacher and girls' tennis coach. Her marriage to Dr. John Canby, an Army physician, took her around the world. She was a dedicated leader in the Officers' Wives Club, building networks of support for other military families. She even learned conversational German and Hindi to better establish connections with foreign families. She remained a dedicated athlete and volunteer for health and family organizations during this time.
When Margaret and her family moved back to San Antonio, she began sharing her love of tennis locally, advocating for programs to make the sport accessible for those of all ages and abilities. She was the San Antonio Tennis Association Leagues coordinator for over a decade, doubling the number of players in local leagues. She was Director of the Senior Games Tennis venue for 15 years, officiated at US Tennis Association tennis matches (junior high, high school, college, league, and professional games) for 25 years, and served on the San Antonio Tennis Association Board of Directors for 14 years. In these positions, she initiated and supported programs that brought tennis to schools and adaptive tennis to senior centers, veterans, and children with physical impairments.
Margaret is not only a mentor but a decorated competitor, representing the US in six international World Cup competitions (four of them as captain) and winning the 85 Women's World Cup in 2019. She has held multiple top international rankings, including her recent #1 World Doubles in 2017 and #1 World Doubles and #2 World Singles in 2022. Her contributions to the sport have earned her inductions into the Texas A&M Kingsville Hall of Fame, the Texas Senior Games Hall of Fame, and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
